Joan Everest was born on 5 September 1916, the only child of Eric H.H. Everest and Kate Elizabeth (Toi) Scott-Miller. Her father's sister was the actress Barbara Everest, and Mount Everest was named after her ancestor Sir George Everest (1790-1866) Surveyor-General of India. Joan was also cousin to John Edward Bernard Hill (MP), their mothers being sisters. Joan lived in Malaya, Kenya and England.
